Open-source parts inside Reel Studio

Last updated October 30, 2026

Reel Studio uses open-source software, and each part keeps its own license. This page is the source offer for the programs we build ourselves and ship in the installers: FFmpeg and FFprobe, plus the two libraries that open iPhone (HEIC) photos.

FFmpeg 7.1.1, build rs2 (GNU GPL v3)

Reel Studio runs ffmpeg and ffprobe as separate programs to read, convert and render video. We compile them from the unmodified FFmpeg 7.1.1 source with the libraries below. Because they include x264 and are built with --enable-gpl --enable-version3, the two programs are licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3. A copy of the license ships next to them in the app.

The files below are the complete corresponding source for the FFmpeg and FFprobe programs shipped in the Reel Studio installers, for both Windows and macOS. We keep them online for as long as those builds are distributed. No account or purchase is needed to download them.

The exact configure line of each build is in BUILDINFO.txt inside its zip, and ffmpeg -version prints it too.

To rebuild: unpack the recipe and run bash build.sh <workdir> (in an MSYS2 UCRT64 shell on Windows, or a terminal on an Apple silicon Mac); its README lists the tools it needs. The script checks every source against the SHA-256 in sources.txt before it compiles. A rebuild gives an equivalent program, not necessarily a byte-identical file. You can also point Reel Studio at your own FFmpeg build.

HEIC photo support (GNU LGPL v3)

Reel Studio opens HEIC photos (the format iPhones use) through two libraries, libheif and libde265, licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 3. They ship as separate library files, decode only, and can be replaced.

Everything else

The other third-party parts of the app (Electron, Python, the Python and npm packages, the fonts and the face-detection model) are listed with their licenses in THIRD_PARTY.md, which comes with every copy of Reel Studio in the licenses folder of the installed app, next to the full license texts.
